Elisabeth Mason

Media and communications law

Elisabeth joined Brett Wilson in August 2019 from Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP.

Elisabeth qualified as a solicitor in 2016 and has acted for claimants and defendants in a wide range of media and commercial disputes. She has extensive experience in all stages of High Court litigation, having taken cases to trial in both the Queen’s Bench and Chancery Divisions. Elisabeth’s litigation experience enables her to advise clients from the very outset of a matter on the best strategy to achieve their aims in the most cost effective way.

Elisabeth was a key part of the legal team that acted for the successful claimant in Zahir Monir v Steve Wood [2018] EWHC 3525 (QB), in which Mr Justice Nicklin awarded Mr Monir £40,000 in damages after he was libelled on Twitter. That case marked an important development in the law relating to the responsibility for publication of social media posts. It was also cited with approval by the Supreme Court in the case of Stocker v Stocker [2019] UKSC 17 (3 April 2019) in relation to how meaning should be attributed to statements written on social media.
